How World's FFXIV and The Witcher 3 Collabs Inspired Monster Hunter Wilds - IGN First

Monster Hunter Wilds boasts numerous changes, new features, and quality-of-life improvements. But its development was subtly shaped by earlier crossover events in Monster Hunter World. Specifically, feedback from Final Fantasy XIV's director, Naoki Yoshida, during the FFXIV crossover, and the positive reception to the Witcher 3 crossover, directly influenced gameplay elements in Wilds.

Yoshida's suggestion, made during the FFXIV collaboration, inspired a key HUD change: displaying attack names on screen in real-time. This feature, initially glimpsed in the 2018 FFXIV crossover event (featuring Cactuars, a Chocobo-themed Kulu-Ya-Ku hunt, Drachen armor, and the challenging Behemoth fight), allows players to instantly see the name of the attack being performed. The Behemoth fight, in particular, showcased this with on-screen text displaying Behemoth's moves. Even the post-Behemoth "Jump" emote displayed "[Hunter] performs Jump," a precursor to Wilds' enhanced HUD.

The positive player response to the Witcher 3 crossover in Monster Hunter World, where Geralt of Rivia's voiced dialogue and choices were a key feature, directly led to the inclusion of more dialogue options and a speaking protagonist in Monster Hunter Wilds. This was a deliberate test by director Yuya Tokuda to gauge player reaction to such changes.

Tokuda, while not actively developing Wilds at the time of the World collaborations, saw these events as opportunities to explore future directions for the series. His personal initiative to secure a Witcher 3 collaboration proved insightful, shaping Wilds' design.
