Sucker Punch, the developer behind the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, is set to address one of the primary criticisms of the original game with its upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. The new title aims to tackle the "repetitive nature" of the open-world gameplay that some players and critics found in the 2020 action-adventure game.
Ghost of Yotei Promises Players The "Freedom to Explore"
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sony and Sucker Punch provided insights into Ghost of Yotei, which follows the journey of a new protagonist, Atsu. Creative Director Jason Connell emphasized the team's efforts to create a less repetitive experience. "One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over," Connell explained. "We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences." Furthermore, Ghost of Yotei will introduce the mastery of firearms alongside traditional melee weapons like the katana, adding a fresh layer to the gameplay.
Despite Ghost of Tsushima's impressive 83/100 Metacritic score, its gameplay has faced criticism for being "a competent but shallow and overfamiliar attempt to replicate Assassin’s Creed style open world adventure in the world of 13th century samurai," according to one review. Another critique suggested that the game "could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure."
The community has echoed these sentiments, with one player noting, "Ghost of Tsushima is beautiful, but insanely repetitive and dull. The problem is that it all gets repetitive very quickly. There are only 5 enemies the entire game. There's sword guy, sword and shield guy, spear guy, big guy, and archer."
Sucker Punch is determined to elevate Ghost of Yotei by addressing the repetitiveness that plagued its predecessor, while maintaining the cinematic flair and stunning visuals that have become the hallmark of the series. Creative Director Nate Fox stated, "When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves is 'What is the DNA of a Ghost game?' It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan."
Announced during the State of Play in September 2024, *Ghost of Yotei* is slated for release in 2025 on the PS5. The game promises to offer players the "freedom to explore" the breathtaking scenery of Mount Yotei at their "own pace," as highlighted by Sucker Punch Sr Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb in a PlayStation blog post.
