During an exclusive interview at EVO 2024, Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto shared insights into the company's strategic vision for the future of crossover fighting games and how they aim to satisfy both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
A Deep Dive into Capcom’s Development Vision
At EVO 2024, Capcom showcased a selection of titles from the newly announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. This comprehensive package includes six landmark games from the legendary Versus series, among them Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which continues to be hailed as one of the most influential fighting games ever made.
IGN had the opportunity to sit down with Shuhei Matsumoto, the producer behind the project, who provided valuable insight into the development process and Capcom’s broader ambitions for the series.
Matsumoto revealed that the collection has been in the works for approximately three to four years. The extensive development timeline reflects the level of care and collaboration required to bring these classic titles up to modern standards. Initial negotiations with Marvel took time, slightly delaying progress, but ultimately led to a strong partnership between both companies. “We've been planning for about three, four years to make this project a reality,” Matsumoto explained, underscoring Capcom’s deep commitment to honoring the legacy of the Versus series while making it accessible to today’s audience.
