2XKO Alpha Playtest: Addressing Player Feedback and Refining Gameplay

2XKO Alpha Playtest Feedback Taken into Serious Consideration

The 2XKO Alpha Lab Playtest, despite running only four days, has generated a significant amount of player feedback. This article details how 2XKO plans to incorporate this feedback into the game's development.

Addressing Combo Concerns and Tutorial Improvements

2XKO director, Shaun Rivera, announced via Twitter (X) that adjustments are underway based on the playtest feedback. The game's League of Legends connection attracted a large player base, leading to the discovery and online sharing of highly damaging, and arguably unfair, combo strings.

Rivera acknowledged the "really creative" combos but highlighted the issue of extended periods where opponents have minimal control. A key change will involve reducing the frequency of "Touch of Death" (TOD) combos—instant kills from full health. While maintaining the fast-paced action is a priority, the goal is to ensure balanced and engaging matches. Rivera stated that while some TODs were anticipated, the team is analyzing data to ensure they remain exceptional outcomes requiring high skill.

The tutorial mode has also received criticism. While the game's core mechanics are considered accessible, mastering its intricacies poses a greater challenge. The lack of skill-based matchmaking in the playtest exacerbated this, often pitting novices against experienced players. Professional player Christopher "NYChrisG" described 2XKO as potentially niche due to its complex six-button system and demanding gameplay.

Rivera confirmed plans for significant tutorial improvements, acknowledging the need for enhanced onboarding. A Reddit post by a tutorial team member actively solicited player suggestions, including adopting structures similar to successful titles like Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6.

Maintaining Enthusiasm Despite Feedback

Despite the criticisms, 2XKO has seen significant player engagement. Professional player William "Leffen" Hjelte streamed the game for 19 hours, and Twitch viewership peaked at 60,425 on the first day.

While the closed alpha continues with no release date set, the substantial player feedback and impressive viewership numbers suggest strong potential and a growing community.
