Bethesda Removes Gore and Dismemberment from Starfield

Author : Anthony May 03,2025

Bethesda had initially intended to incorporate gore and dismemberment mechanics into Starfield, but these plans were ultimately abandoned due to technical challenges. Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who worked on The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of interacting with space suits was the primary reason for cutting this feature.

"The technical implications of integrating these mechanics with the various suits were significant," Mejillones noted. "You had to manage cutting the helmet in a specific way, ensuring it detached properly, and dealing with the flesh underneath. It became a complex issue with all the hoses on the helmets and the evolving character creator, which now allowed for significant changes in body size."

While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment mechanics in Starfield—features that were present in Fallout 4—Mejillones argued that these elements fit better within the "tongue-in-cheek" humor of the Fallout series. "It's part of the fun," he remarked.

Starfield launched in September 2023 and has since attracted over 15 million players. IGN's review highlighted the game's compelling roleplaying quests and solid combat, awarding it a 7/10 score and noting that despite its challenges, the game's "gravitational pull" is hard to resist.

In a recent development, another former Bethesda developer expressed astonishment at the extensive loading screens in Starfield, particularly in the city of Neon. Since its release, Bethesda has made efforts to enhance the game, introducing a 60fps performance mode and releasing the Shattered Space expansion in September.
