EA's Next Battlefield Game: A Return to Roots

Electronic Arts (EA) announced today that the next installment in the Battlefield franchise is slated for release sometime between April 2025 and March 2026, falling within their fiscal year 2026. This follows the release of a pre-alpha gameplay reveal showcasing Battlefield Labs, a new player-testing initiative designed to gather feedback and shape the game's development.

This ambitious project unites four EA studios under the "Battlefield Studios" banner: DICE (Stockholm), Motive (Montreal), Ripple Effect (U.S.), and Criterion (UK). Each studio is tackling specific aspects of the game:

  • DICE (Sweden): Multiplayer development.
  • Motive (Montreal): Single-player missions and multiplayer maps.
  • Ripple Effect (U.S.): Onboarding new players to the franchise.
  • Criterion (UK): Single-player campaign.

EA emphasizes that this collaborative effort is entering a crucial development phase, prioritizing player feedback to refine core gameplay elements. Battlefield Labs will facilitate extensive testing, focusing on core combat, destruction, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and map design. Classic modes like Conquest and Breakthrough will be tested, alongside explorations of the class system to enhance strategic gameplay. Importantly, the game will revert to 64-player maps and abandon the Specialist system from Battlefield 2042.

The development of this new Battlefield marks a significant investment for EA, following the closure of Ridgeline Games and the shift away from the standalone single-player title they were developing. The new game will return to a modern setting, drawing inspiration from the highly-regarded Battlefield 3 and 4 eras, as confirmed by Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization. Concept art previously revealed hints at naval and aerial combat, alongside natural disaster elements.

EA aims to recapture the essence of the Battlefield experience, appealing to longtime fans while expanding the franchise's reach to a broader audience. While specific platforms and the official title remain unannounced, the commitment from EA and the combined efforts of four studios suggest a significant push to deliver a successful successor to Battlefield 2042.
