Ex-PlayStation Boss Disappointed With Switch 2 Reveal

Author : Dylan Apr 22,2026

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida recently shared his thoughts on the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, and his reaction was… somewhat measured.

In a recent interview with Easy Allies, Yoshida was asked about his impressions of the Switch 2 reveal. Here is his full response:

"My feeling was a bit mixed regarding Nintendo's message. In a way, I feel Nintendo might be losing a bit of its unique identity. Historically, they've been about crafting entirely new experiences by developing hardware and games in tandem. The Switch 2, as many expected, is essentially a more powerful Switch—featuring a larger screen, a faster processor, higher resolution supporting 4K and 120 fps. They even had a hardware specialist introduce the stream, much like other platform holders do. The core message is 'we've made improvements,' which is what other companies have consistently done."

Yoshida added that for gamers who only use Nintendo systems, the Switch 2 is fantastic because it enables them to play titles like Elden Ring that were previously unavailable. However, for those who also game on other platforms, the upgrade feels less groundbreaking.

"Publishers knew this presentation would be one of the most-viewed events of the year, reaching millions. It's an excellent opportunity to launch a new game, but many of the showcased titles were ports from previous generations. I'm not sure if this reflects Nintendo's strategy or third-party decisions. One standout for me was Enter the Gungeon 2—it looked impressive and was announced effectively."

Yoshida also praised Drag x Drive for embodying a "very Nintendo" spirit, before discussing the console's pricing disparities between Japan and other regions. He concluded by saying:

"Some innovations, like the new camera or mouse support, show Nintendo is still creating fresh experiences, which is great. But aside from those aspects, I was personally a little let down—though not everyone will feel that way, since many people simply wanted a better Switch."

Later in the discussion, Yoshida recognized that the Switch 2 is a sound business decision, with technical enhancements likely designed by skilled engineers. His overall view aligns with a common online sentiment: the system plays it safe, which may be the smart move, but it can be disappointing for fans who cherish Nintendo's more unconventional side. That said, features like mouse controls hint that Nintendo's playful, inventive spirit is still present.

Although Yoshida discussed the Switch 2's pricing extensively with Easy Allies, the U.S. price remains unconfirmed. Nintendo temporarily halted North American pre-orders following new tariff announcements on the same day as the console's reveal. With the global launch set for June 5, time is running short for Nintendo to resolve these pricing details before release.
