Inspired by Belle Epoque France, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will launch on April 24th, 2025. The game, built from the ground up with a reinvented turn-based combat system, will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Pre-orders are open! Secure your copy on the Xbox Store ($44.99 standard, $59.99 Deluxe) or take advantage of a 10% discount on Steam and PS5 (until May 2nd and release day respectively, with PlayStation Plus required for the PS5 discount). The Epic Games Store listing allows wishlisting only.
Meet the New Recruits: Monoco and Esquie
The Expedition 33 team expands with two new, compelling characters:
- Monoco: A Gestral, a being that thrives in combat and views it as a form of meditation. Monoco possesses the unique ability to transform into defeated enemies, leveraging their powers. Interestingly, Gestrals are immune to the Paintress's influence.
- Esquie: A legendary figure, considered the oldest and strongest being in the world. Esquie's role is primarily explorative; he grants access to various locations on the open-world map, requiring the retrieval of his special stones to unlock new abilities and areas.
These newcomers join previously revealed characters: Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso, all united in their quest to end a cycle of death.
Innovative Turn-Based Combat and Deep Character Customization
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 boasts a revitalized turn-based combat system. A real-time element is integrated, allowing for parrying and dodging enemy attacks for increased damage. Powerful attacks are triggered by specific button presses. This "reactive turn-based" system caters to various skill levels, with adjustable difficulty settings to modify parry/dodge windows.
Extensive character customization is also a key feature. Each character has unique mechanics and skill trees (e.g., Lune's "Stain" accumulation). "Pictos," equipment modifiers, evolve into permanent Luminas (passive effects) after four battles, providing further character modification options. This allows for hundreds of build variations.
The combination of strategic depth and reactive combat promises a fresh and engaging experience.
