Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) Gameplay Emphasizes “Addictive Fear”

The first official creator message for Resident Evil Requiem highlights its unique, addictive brand of fear. Here's a look at how it compares to past series entries and how the title connects to the overall narrative.

Resident Evil Requiem: Creator's Message #1

Pushing the Series Forward

According to its director, Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) is designed to propel the series forward with its concept of "addictive fear." In Capcom's first creator message video released on June 26, Director Koshi Nakanishi and other developers shared insights into the game's core vision.

Nakanishi explained that the central development goal was to craft an experience of genuinely addictive fear. Producer Masachika Kawata noted that the team considered various systems early on, including an online or open-world Resident Evil. However, these ideas were ultimately abandoned once the team realized they weren't what the core fanbase truly wanted.

The series has experimented with different forms of fear: RE7 built every element around horror, the RE2 remake delivered fear through its gameplay, and the RE4 remake leaned more into action. For RE9, Nakanishi focused on the primal fear concept from RE7 and evolved it further.

"For us, 'addictive fear' means that even when you're terrified, you just can't put the controller down," he said. Overcoming that fear is intended to deliver a powerful sense of accomplishment.

Grace Ashcroft: A Classic Horror Protagonist

RE9 introduces a new face to the series: Grace Ashcroft. Kawata describes her as a "classic horror game protagonist." Art Director Tomonori Takano added that, unlike some past protagonists, Grace isn't a superhero. She relies on her own strength and resilience to survive, which is a key part of her appeal.

Producer Masato Kumazawa hopes Grace will be as beloved as Ethan Winters from RE7. Players will empathize with her situation and form a deep connection as the story unfolds. "She's a character players can truly identify with," Kumazawa noted.

The developers emphasized that her facial expressions and even her hair are vital to her personality. Leveraging advancements in the RE Engine and technology from PRAGMATA, like the "Strand" feature, they achieved the visual quality they were aiming for. Takano confidently called her design a "visual success."

A Requiem for the People of Raccoon City

In a June 26 PlayStation.Blog interview, Kumazawa provided more details about the upcoming title. The name "Requiem" holds a deep, multifaceted meaning within the story, with further interpretations likely to emerge after players finish the game.

Kumazawa explained, "The title works on several levels. It's a requiem for the protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, as she grapples with her mother's death eight years ago. It's also a requiem for all the victims of the Raccoon City incident, among other things. Upon completing the game, I believe players will discover even more layers of meaning."

While recent titles like RE7 and Village centered on the Winters family, RE9 returns the focus to Raccoon City. Kumazawa feels this return is particularly fitting as the series marks its 30th anniversary.

Third-Person Perspective Added from Fan Feedback

The inclusion of a third-person perspective was a direct response to fan input and not part of the original plan. "Our analysis of recent series gameplay trends showed that many players strongly prefer either first-person or third-person views exclusively," Kumazawa stated.

He acknowledged that implementing both perspectives for RE9 was a major challenge, as the viewpoint is crucial for creating fear. "These differences affect not just character models and animations, but also fine-tuned game balance, UI, sound design, and more. It's almost like developing two separate games in parallel," Kumazawa elaborated.

By embracing new technology and prioritizing fan feedback, RE9 is shaping up to be a game that welcomes both long-time fans and newcomers. Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest updates on the game, check out our related article below!
