"Remakes Could Revive Bethesda, Oblivion Shows"

Author : Jacob May 27,2025

By Azura, by Azura, by Azura – the rumors were indeed true. Bethesda set the gaming world ablaze when they unveiled Virtuos' remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in a surprise shadow-drop during their 'Elder Scrolls Direct.' The announcement sent waves of excitement through the community, resulting in hundreds of thousands of players diving into the game almost instantly. This moment of global celebration comes as a welcome relief for Bethesda Game Studios, which has been navigating turbulent waters following the challenging launch of Fallout 76 and the lukewarm reception to their new sci-fi venture, Starfield. Amidst fierce competition from RPGs like Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 and Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, fans have wondered if Bethesda has lost its touch. Yet, this re-release of Oblivion suggests a promising path forward, albeit not in the direction one might expect.

At its zenith, Bethesda Game Studios was the undisputed leader in the RPG realm. In 2020, Microsoft's leaked FTC documents disclosed that Fallout 4 had sold an impressive 25 million copies, with over 5 million units sold in the first week alone, according to VGChartz. By 2023, Todd Howard announced that Skyrim had surpassed 60 million sales, though frequent re-releases undoubtedly contributed to this figure. In contrast, Starfield's sales are estimated at just over three million units a year and a half post-launch, a figure that, despite the boost from Game Pass subscribers and the absence of a PlayStation version, might be considered underwhelming. The Starfield fanbase, while dedicated, is smaller compared to those of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, and dissatisfaction with the game's first expansion, Shattered Space, has been evident.

This leaves Bethesda with a significant challenge. With The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 still years away, how can this iconic RPG developer recapture the hearts of its fans? The answer lies in revisiting their storied past.

Rumors of the Oblivion remaster surfaced in September 2023, fueled by leaked Microsoft documents hinting at several unannounced Bethesda titles, including a remaster of the 2006 classic set in Tamriel. Speculation grew until January 2025, when a former Virtuos employee leaked further details, sparking debates among fans akin to the Stormcloaks vs. the Imperials divide. The official announcement last week set the internet ablaze, with over 6.4 million Google searches for 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' and a 713% surge in the last week alone. Bethesda's reveal livestream peaked at over half a million viewers, and despite leaks, more than 600,000 tuned in to see the 19-year-old game reintroduced. The overwhelming demand crashed discount game key sites like CDKeys, while Fanatical and Green Man Gaming struggled to keep up. As of yesterday, Steam reported 125,000 concurrent players, with Oblivion firmly at the top of the best-seller list. The fervor for this remaster burns as brightly as the flames from the Oblivion gates themselves.

The message from players is clear: if you (re)build it, they will come. Engaging fans during long development cycles by revisiting beloved classics like Morrowind or the post-apocalyptic landscapes of Fallout makes strategic sense. While Bethesda's main team focuses on new projects, trusted partners like Virtuos can leverage the blueprints of past successes to deliver remasters more swiftly. These remasters tap into established fanbases and introduce new generations to the rich worlds of Tamriel and beyond.

Bethesda has previously leveraged its catalog effectively. During the first season of the Fallout TV show on Prime Video, Fallout 4 saw discounts of up to 75%, alongside a timely next-gen update incorporating elements from the show. This strategy led to a staggering 7,500% sales increase in Europe, despite the game's age.

Microsoft's leaked Bethesda roadmap hinted at a Fallout 3 remaster following Oblivion in 2026, aligning with the second season of the Fallout series. Given the show's first season's synergy with Fallout 4, and the upcoming focus on New Vegas, could Bethesda surprise fans with a New Vegas remake? The shadow-drop of Oblivion suggests such a move isn't out of the question.

The resounding success of the Oblivion remaster underscores the potential of revisiting Bethesda's past. Yet, if any game in their catalog deserves a remake, it's The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Fans have long clamored for this, with some even using Skyrim's tools to remake it, as seen in projects like Skyblivion. However, remaking Morrowind presents unique challenges. It sits at the crossroads of Bethesda's evolution, featuring partial voice acting, text-driven storytelling, no quest markers, and rudimentary combat physics. While Virtuos managed to update some of Oblivion's systems, Morrowind's core mechanics are intrinsically tied to its charm. Remaking it is a delicate balance; modernize too much, and you risk losing its soul, yet leave too many outdated systems, and it could feel like a relic.

The challenge for Bethesda, as an icon in the RPG genre, is to innovate while retaining their audience. Rockstar Games has kept GTA players engaged with GTA Online, supporting the development of GTA 6. Bethesda's strength lies in its immersive, single-player worlds, unlike the multiplayer-focused Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76. The enthusiastic response to the Oblivion remaster shows that fans are eager to revisit Bethesda's classic worlds. While not every remaster guarantees success, as evidenced by Rockstar's GTA Definitive Editions, breathing new life into old classics could be the key for Bethesda to reclaim its throne in the RPG landscape.
