Metal Gear Pioneered a Storytelling Concept in Stealth Games

Hideo Kojima Reflects on Metal Gear's 37th Anniversary and the Evolution of Storytelling in Games

July 13th marked the 37th anniversary of Konami's groundbreaking stealth action-adventure game, Metal Gear. Creator Hideo Kojima used this occasion to reflect on the game's innovative approach to storytelling, particularly highlighting the in-game radio transceiver.

Kojima emphasized that while Metal Gear's stealth mechanics are widely praised, the radio transceiver was a truly revolutionary element. This feature, utilized by Solid Snake, allowed for real-time narrative progression, providing players with crucial information – boss identities, character betrayals, team member deaths – all impacting the player's experience. The transceiver also served a practical purpose, guiding players through gameplay mechanics and rules.

Kojima tweeted, "Metal Gear was packed with things that were ahead of its time, but the biggest invention was including the concept of a radio transceiver in the storytelling." He explained that this interactive element prevented narrative detachment by keeping players informed even during events occurring outside their immediate actions. The transceiver allowed for parallel storytelling, foreshadowing future events while grounding the player in their current situation. He noted with pride that this "gimmick" has influenced many modern shooter games.

Kojima's Continued Creative Vision: OD, Death Stranding 2, and Beyond

At 60, Kojima also addressed the challenges of aging and its effect on his creative process. He acknowledged the physical demands but emphasized the value of accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom in anticipating societal trends and project outcomes. He believes this enhances the "accuracy of creation" throughout the entire game development lifecycle – from planning and experimentation to production and release.

Kojima, renowned for his cinematic storytelling approach, continues to push boundaries. Currently, he is collaborating with Jordan Peele on a project titled OD, and Kojima Productions is preparing for the next Death Stranding installment, slated for a live-action adaptation by A24.

Looking ahead, Kojima remains optimistic about the future of game development. He believes that technological advancements will empower developers to achieve feats unimaginable three decades ago, making the creative process easier and more efficient. He concluded, "As long as I do not lose my passion for 'creation,' I believe I can keep going."
