In a recent Xbox Wire article, Compulsion Games' writer and narrative designer Zaire Lanier shared exciting details about South of Midnight. Set to release on April 8, 2025, the game unfolds in the fictional town of Prospero, a melting pot of Southern-inspired locales including flooded countrysides, abysmal swamps, and Appalachian mountains.

The story begins as a hurricane looms over Prospero, with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for the storm. A heated argument leads Hazel to leave home, only to witness her house swept away by a devastating flood. Driven by the need to find her mother, Hazel embarks on a quest that leads her into a world where Southern folktales come to life.

Lanier describes Hazel's encounter with Catfish, an enormous talking creature trapped in a tree amidst the hurricane's aftermath. Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical abilities to see and manipulate the threads that weave the fabric of fate. As Hazel navigates this fantastical realm, she faces Haints—corrupted creatures that spread decay. Her mission is to master her Weaving powers, free the Haints from corruption, and restore the world around her.

South of Midnight will be available for early access on April 3, 2025, with the Premium Edition priced at $49.99 on Steam and the Xbox Store. The base game will cost $39.99, and players can also enjoy it on day one with a Game Pass subscription.

"Timing is everything," Roy explained, detailing how players can pull distant enemies closer for melee attacks, push them away to interrupt and stun, and follow up with devastating strikes.

Hazel's arsenal includes a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, inspired by traditional textile crafting. These tools allow players to engage with Haints using a variety of movesets and abilities, ultimately aiming to relieve them of their corruption.

Weaving extends beyond combat into exploration, where Hazel uses her powers to conjure past incarnations of objects. During the Direct, viewers saw Hazel summon a ghost-like carriage and a glider, showcasing the game's puzzle-solving elements.

As Hazel journeys through diverse environments, each ruled by mythical creatures steeped in Southern Gothic lore, she encounters unique challenges. Art director Whitney Clayton highlighted creatures like Two-Toed Tom, a colossal albino alligator adorned with weapons and vegetation.

To heal these corrupted beings, Hazel must collect Echoes—fragments of haunted memories—and engage in epic confrontations. By mastering her Weaving abilities, Hazel aims to free these creatures from their corruption and ultimately reunite with her mother.
