Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games (GTA 6 developers), has unveiled its strategic vision for future game development, emphasizing the creation of new intellectual properties (IPs) over solely relying on established franchises.
Take-Two Prioritizes New Game Development
Reliance on Legacy IPs is Unsustainable
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, during the company's Q2 2025 investor call, addressed the future of its established franchises, including Rockstar's GTA and Red Dead Redemption series. While acknowledging the current success of these legacy IPs, Zelnick highlighted the inevitable decline in their long-term appeal. He compared this decline to the natural processes of decay and entropy, stating that even successful sequels eventually see a decrease in impact.
Zelnick emphasized the risk of over-reliance on these established titles, likening it to "burning the furniture to heat the house." He stressed the importance of investing in new IPs to ensure the company's long-term success. While acknowledging that sequels are lower-risk ventures, he firmly believes that innovation through new IPs is crucial for continued growth.
As reported by PCGamer, Zelnick explained that while sequels often outperform their predecessors, the inherent decline in impact over time necessitates the development of fresh content.
Staggered Releases for GTA 6 and Borderlands 4
Regarding future releases of existing IPs, Zelnick confirmed to Variety that Take-Two plans to space out major game launches to avoid market saturation. While GTA 6's release is anticipated in Fall 2025, it will not coincide with Borderlands 4, which is slated for release in Spring 2025/2026 (April 1, 2025 - March 31, 2026). A specific release date for GTA 6 remains unannounced.

Take-Two's subsidiary, Ghost Story Games, is developing a new IP: Judas, a story-driven, first-person shooter RPG expected to launch sometime in 2025. The game, created by Ken Levine, will feature player-driven narrative choices impacting relationships and the overall story.
