Halo Studios Embarks on a New Era of Halo Game Development
Microsoft-owned Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) has confirmed it's working on several new Halo games. This announcement coincides with a rebranding initiative, signifying a new chapter for the franchise.
Studio Head Pierre Hintze explained the rationale behind the change: "Halo has two distinct chapters: Bungie and 343 Industries. Now, we see a demand for more. We're not just improving development efficiency, but fundamentally changing how we create Halo games."
The studio will leverage Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) for future Halo titles. UE5's reputation for high-quality graphics and realistic physics makes it an ideal choice. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney tweeted, "Epic is honored that Halo Studios has chosen our tools for their future work!"
Halo's leadership team detailed their new direction. Hintze acknowledged a previous overemphasis on supporting Halo Infinite, stating the UE5 transition enables them to create superior Halo experiences. "Our singular focus is making the best possible Halo games," he emphasized.
COO Elizabeth Van Wyck highlighted the importance of player feedback in shaping the franchise's future. "Success hinges on creating games players want to play. This new structure empowers the game developers to make key decisions." The studio is actively seeking broader player input.
Studio Art Director Chris Matthew explained the technical advantages of UE5. "Parts of our existing engine are nearly 25 years old. Unreal offers features unavailable to us, features that would take immense time and resources to replicate."
The move to UE5 also streamlines updates and content delivery. Van Wyck noted, "It's not just about development time, but also about updating the game and quickly responding to player feedback." Halo Studios has begun recruiting for these new projects.
