When Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 burst onto the gaming scene in 2025, it didn’t just capture attention—it claimed the title of the year’s highest-rated game, selling over one million copies in just three days. Behind this instant classic lies an origin story as unexpected as it is inspiring: a director’s boredom, a pandemic lockdown, and a dream sparked by childhood nostalgia.
A Dream Born from Boredom
The mastermind behind Expedition 33, Guillaume Broche, was working at Ubisoft during the height of the pandemic when restlessness set in. Longing to create something meaningful, he found himself drawn back to the games that shaped his youth—particularly the Final Fantasy series. That nostalgic spark ignited a bold idea: to craft a modern homage to the classic JRPGs he loved.
With no formal team and no funding, Broche turned to the internet. He began posting on Reddit and various online forums, reaching out to anyone who might share his vision. His goal? To build a turn-based, Belle Époque-inspired RPG that blended rich storytelling with handcrafted visuals—a genre that wasn’t exactly trending at the time.
The Power of a Single Reply
One of those early messages caught the eye of Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, who was under lockdown in Australia. Intrigued by the opportunity, she auditioned despite having no prior voice acting experience. "I was like: 'I've never done that, it sounds kinda cool'," she recalled. Her performance impressed Broche, and she was cast in a major role—only to later evolve into the game’s lead writer.
As the project gained momentum, Broche made the pivotal decision to leave Ubisoft and fully dedicate himself to the game. He officially founded Sandfall Interactive, a studio built on passion, collaboration, and creative risk-taking.
From Online Posts to Industry Icons
A major turning point came when Kepler Interactive stepped in to publish and fund the game. With financial backing secured, the team grew to around 30 core members—many of whom were discovered through unconventional channels. Composer Lorien Testard, for instance, joined after Broche found his work on SoundCloud.
The collaboration didn’t stop there. With Kepler’s support, Sandfall brought on acclaimed actors to voice key characters, including Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), adding cinematic depth to the game’s narrative.
A Team That Did It All
Despite the growing team, roles remained fluid. Broche and Svedberg-Yen wore multiple hats throughout development. Svedberg-Yen, in addition to writing, handled translations across several languages. Broche praised the team’s dedication: "We have, I think, an amazing team mostly of junior people but they are so incredibly invested in the project and talented."
That passion paid off. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is now celebrated as a generational title—a game born not from corporate mandates, but from curiosity, serendipity, and a desire to do something different.
