The Witcher’s Doug Cockle on Becoming Netflix’s Latest Geralt

Author : Hazel Feb 23,2025

Doug Cockle, the iconic voice of Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red's Witcher games, reprises his role in Netflix's animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Unlike the live-action series starring Henry Cavill (and later Liam Hemsworth), Cockle's performance remains true to his original interpretation, untouched by the need to emulate either actor's portrayal. This allows fans to enjoy the familiar, gravelly tones they've cherished for nearly two decades.

Cockle's journey began in 2005, voicing Geralt for the first Witcher game. He recalls the initial challenge of finding the right vocal register, spending long hours each day pushing his voice to its limits. This rigorous process, akin to an athlete training their muscles, eventually strengthened his vocal chords, perfecting the signature Geralt voice.

A pivotal moment arrived with the English translation of The Last Wish. Access to Sapkowski's writing provided Cockle with deeper insights into Geralt's character, clarifying the character's often-described emotional detachment. This understanding significantly informed his performance in The Witcher 2. Cockle developed a deep appreciation for Sapkowski's work, particularly Season of Storms, expressing a strong desire to voice Geralt in an adaptation of this novel.

Sirens of the Deep, based on Sapkowski's short story "A Little Sacrifice," offers a darker twist on The Little Mermaid. While the film features intense action and political intrigue, Cockle highlights the lighter moments, particularly a humorous exchange between Geralt and Jaskier, as showcasing a less-explored facet of Geralt's personality. He enjoys portraying the full spectrum of Geralt's character, from his serious and brooding moments to his attempts at humor.

A unique challenge arose in Sirens of the Deep: Cockle had to learn a fictional mermaid language. Despite initial difficulties, he successfully navigated this linguistic hurdle.

Cockle's voice acting journey continues with The Witcher 4, where Geralt takes a supporting role, placing Ciri in the spotlight. He expresses excitement about this shift in perspective, believing it aligns perfectly with the source material and promises an intriguing narrative.
