Dynasty Warriors: Origins ups the ante with significantly more challenging enemies. Producer Tomohiko Sho's directive to the development team? A simple, yet impactful, "Go and kill the player." This article delves into the design choices behind the game's increased difficulty.
A Deadlier Battlefield: "Go and Kill the Player"
The heightened challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins stems directly from producer Tomohiko Sho's instruction to make the enemies far more aggressive and powerful. In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho explained that this design choice aimed to inject a greater sense of realism into the combat. The struggle for survival isn't limited to the player; enemy soldiers and generals are equally desperate.
While significantly increasing the difficulty, Sho emphasized the importance of balanced challenge. The goal wasn't to create an insurmountable experience, but rather to provide rewarding obstacles that players could overcome with skill and strategy. He stated, "Even if you're not that good at action games, if you learn them in order, you can play comfortably and feel a sense of success." The development team faced the considerable challenge of merging the classic "musou" exhilaration of overwhelming enemies with the heightened realism of a brutal battlefield.
A Return to Roots: The "Origins" of a New Era
A notable departure from tradition is the absence of a numerical title. Instead of Dynasty Warriors 10, the game is titled Dynasty Warriors: Origins, marking the first non-numbered entry in the franchise's history.
This title reflects the game's focus on the first half of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, unlike previous installments that covered the entire narrative. In an interview at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show with TheGamer, Sho clarified that the story concludes with the pivotal Battle of Chibi (Battle of Red Cliffs). He explained, "We really wanted to be thorough and intense in telling this story; it’s one of the epic points, so we’re only focusing on up until that point."
Arriving seven years after the previous main installment, Dynasty Warriors: Origins stays true to its source material, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a blend of historical fact and fiction detailing the Han Dynasty. The game introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, who navigates the power struggles of ancient China.
Released on January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Read Game8's review for a more in-depth look!
