Dragon Age: The Veilguard Concept Art Reveals Early Plans for Solas

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Solas: From Vengeful God to Dream Advisor – Early Concept Art Reveals a Darker Vision

Early concept sketches for Dragon Age: The Veilguard offer a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Solas, revealing a more overtly vengeful and powerful persona than the character ultimately presented in the final game. Former BioWare artist Nick Thornborrow, whose visual novel prototype significantly influenced the game's narrative, recently shared over 100 sketches showcasing this alternative vision.

Solas, initially introduced in Dragon Age: Inquisition as a helpful companion, later revealed his treacherous plan to shatter the Veil. This plan forms the core of The Veilguard's narrative. However, Thornborrow's artwork depicts a stark contrast to Solas's mostly advisory role in the released game.

The sketches, primarily black and white with selective color accents (highlighting elements like the lyrium dagger), portray Solas shedding his guise of a sympathetic advisor. He's depicted as a far more imposing figure, closer to a vengeful god. While some scenes, such as his initial attempt to tear the Veil, remain largely consistent with the final game, others are drastically different. Many portray Solas as a colossal, shadowy entity. The ambiguity surrounding these scenes leaves open the question of whether they represent events within Rook's dreams or manifestations of Fen'Harel's power in the real world.

The significant visual differences between the concept art and the final product highlight the substantial evolution of The Veilguard's narrative during development. This is further underscored by the game's late title change from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Thornborrow's behind-the-scenes look provides valuable context, bridging the gap between the initial creative vision and the game's final iteration, offering fans a deeper understanding of Solas's character arc.
