Avowed's Success Spurs Sequel or Expansion Talk
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This has led to discussions regarding the future of the franchise, with hints of potential expansions or sequels.
Future Plans for Avowed's World
In a Bloomberg interview on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed her strong desire to continue working within the established world of Avowed. While no official plans have been announced, Patel stated her enthusiasm for future expansions and a potential sequel, emphasizing the team's established expertise and the rich world they've created: "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Development Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles
Patel also shared insights into the challenging development process. The project, initiated in 2018, faced numerous hurdles, including leadership changes and a game reboot in January 2021. The team had to adapt, streamlining features and ultimately focusing on enhancing the narrative and lore, shifting from an open world to open zones for improved development and quality. Patel reflected on the journey, noting the inherent messiness of game development before things eventually coalesce.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new direction: a tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed internal enthusiasm for a "Pillars: Tactics" title. However, he acknowledged the challenges of determining the project's scope, including team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale. While Sawyer remains committed to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a Baldur's Gate 3-level budget of $100 million, the possibility of a tactics game remains a strong contender.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
