NIS America Accelerates Localization of Trails and Ys Series

Exciting times are ahead for fans of Japanese RPGs! NIS America has committed to speeding up the localization process for Falcom's beloved Trails and Ys series, bringing these acclaimed games to Western audiences much faster. This announcement was made during the digital showcase for Ys X: Nordics by NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa.

"While I can’t delve into the specifics of our internal efforts," Costa shared with PCGamer, "I can assure you that we're putting in the work to localize Falcom games more quickly." He highlighted upcoming releases such as Ys X: Nordics and Trails Through Daybreak II, set to hit Western markets this October and early next year, respectively.

Despite Trails Through Daybreak II launching in Japan in September 2022, its slated Western release in early 2025 represents a significant reduction in the traditional wait times for Trails games. Historically, fans have endured long delays; for example, Trails in the Sky, released in Japan in 2004, wasn't available globally until 2011 via XSEED Games. More recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure also took twelve years to reach Western shores.

The complexity of localization, particularly for text-heavy games like those in the Trails series, has been a major hurdle. Jessica Chavez, former Localization Manager at XSEED Games, explained in a 2011 blog post that translating millions of characters with a small team was a colossal task. While the process still takes two to three years, NIS America remains committed to maintaining high-quality localizations. "We aim to release games as swiftly as possible without compromising on localization quality," Costa emphasized, noting that NIS America has been refining this balance for years.

The challenges of localization are evident in past delays, such as the year-long postponement of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues. Yet, with Costa's recent statements, it's clear that NIS America is striving to enhance both speed and accuracy in their localization efforts.

The recent release of Trails Through Daybreak marks a promising step forward for NIS America. The game's positive reception from both dedicated fans and newcomers bodes well for future localizations. As NIS America continues to refine their approach, fans can look forward to enjoying these cherished series with shorter waits.
