Exploring Monster Hunter Wilds' Oilwell Basin: A Deep Dive into its Ecosystem and New Monsters

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces the Oilwell Basin, a unique environment distinct from previous locales like the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest. This new hunting ground, described by director Yuya Tokuda, shifts dramatically depending on the environmental cycle (Fallow, Inclemency, Plenty). During the Fallow, it's a mud and oil-covered wasteland; Inclemency brings fiery eruptions, burning away the oilsilt; and the Plenty reveals underlying minerals and artifacts, transforming the landscape.

Art director Kaname Fujioka explains the Oilwell Basin's vertical design, with distinct upper, middle, and lower strata, each offering unique challenges and environments. The lower levels, particularly, resemble underwater volcanoes, showcasing the team’s experience from Monster Hunter: World's Coral Highlands. This geothermal ecosystem supports a diverse range of life, from microorganisms thriving on heat to larger creatures adapted to the harsh conditions.

Two notable new monsters inhabit this area: Rompopolo and Ajarakan. Rompopolo, a toxic, globular creature, was designed with a "mad scientist" aesthetic, its purple hue and glowing red eyes reflecting its chaotic nature. Ajarakan, a flame-wreathed gorilla-like monster, contrasts with its straightforward, powerful attacks. Its design emphasizes a top-heavy silhouette to convey a greater sense of threat, and its fiery attacks are a direct reflection of its environment.

The apex predator of the Oilwell Basin is Nu Udra, a fiery octopus-like creature. Its design, a long-held ambition of both Tokuda and Fujioka, draws inspiration from octopuses and demonic imagery. Its flexible body and tentacle attacks present unique challenges, requiring hunters to adapt their strategies. The team leveraged new technological advancements to achieve Nu Udra's fluid movements and interactions with the environment, including its ability to squeeze into tight spaces and its detailed animations.

The Oilwell Basin also features a returning favorite: Gravios. Its inclusion was carefully considered to ensure it fit the environment and gameplay progression. The team focused on retaining its signature hardness while making it a challenging encounter later in the game, encouraging strategic use of the wound system and part breaking.

The developers' dedication to creating memorable and unique monsters shines through in the Oilwell Basin. The team's commitment to pushing technical boundaries and realizing long-held design concepts results in a truly immersive and engaging hunting experience. The Oilwell Basin promises a thrilling and visually stunning addition to the Monster Hunter Wilds experience.
