Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import for PS Vita enthusiasts. The announcement of a global, multi-platform release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a huge surprise, and after 60 hours across various platforms, it's clear why. This isn't just another game; it represents a significant leap for the franchise in the West.

The Western release is a game-changer. Gone are the days of importing Asia English releases. Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options, a feature rarely seen in previous Gundam titles. But how does the game itself fare across different platforms?

The story, while serviceable, is not the game's main draw. It features some lengthy pre-mission dialogue early on, but improves with intriguing character reveals and dialogue later in the game. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though the significance of certain characters might be lost without prior series experience.

The true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies in its unparalleled customization. Players can meticulously adjust individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding options), and even the scale of components, allowing for truly unique Gunpla creations. The ability to combine standard and SD (super deformed) parts adds another layer of creative freedom. Builder parts further enhance customization, offering additional features and skills. EX and OP skills, dependent on parts and weapons, along with ability cartridges providing buffs and debuffs, add strategic depth to combat.

Gameplay involves completing missions, breaking parts, earning rewards, and upgrading components using acquired materials. The game is well-balanced, minimizing the need for grinding on standard difficulty. Higher difficulty levels unlock as the story progresses, increasing the challenge. Optional quests offer additional rewards and fun game modes like survival mode.

Beyond combat and customization, players can personalize their Gunpla with paint jobs, decals, and weathering effects. The sheer depth of customization is astounding.

The gameplay itself is highly enjoyable. Combat remains engaging even on easier difficulties, with a wide variety of weapons and skills to experiment with. Boss fights are cleverly designed, often involving the destruction of weak points and shields, adding a strategic layer to the battles. The visual presentation is a mix of excellent Gunpla models and animations, and somewhat less impressive environments, especially early in the game. The art style is stylized, not realistic.

The soundtrack is a mixed bag, with some forgettable tracks and a few standout pieces. The absence of music from the anime and movies is a slight disappointment. Voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese.

Minor issues include a few repetitive mission types and some bugs (primarily related to Steam Deck). Online multiplayer functionality was not fully testable pre-launch.

The author also shares their experience building a Master Grade Gunpla alongside playing the game, highlighting the intricate detail and craftsmanship involved in creating these models.

Platform Differences:

  • PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Runs well on Steam Deck, though some minor text issues were noted.
  • PS5: Capped at 60fps, excellent visuals, and good rumble support.
  • Switch: Lower resolution, detail, and performance compared to PS5, with noticeable slowdown in assembly and diorama modes.

Ultimate Edition: The additional DLC content, while enjoyable, isn't game-breaking. The diorama mode enhancements are a welcome addition for those who enjoy that aspect of the game.

Overall: Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic game, especially for Gunpla enthusiasts. While the story is decent, the real draw is the incredibly deep customization and engaging gameplay. The PC version, particularly on Steam Deck, offers a strong portable experience. The Switch version is playable but suffers from performance issues. The PS5 version delivers the best visual experience. Highly recommended for fans of the genre.
