NetEase Games is making significant adjustments to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap, aiming to shorten its seasons and introduce at least one new hero every month. This strategic shift is designed to maintain and enhance the live service momentum with its player base.
The new approach was teased during the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which provided insights into the upcoming Season 2. Scheduled to launch on April 11, Season 2 will introduce Emma Frost as the new Vanguard at the outset, followed by Ultron mid-season, whose class details will be unveiled closer to his release. Both heroes are set to bring fresh abilities to the game, keeping fans engaged and excited. However, the most transformative changes to the game's hero dynamics are slated to begin with Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which has yet to receive a release date, NetEase plans to reduce season durations from three months to two. This adjustment will accelerate the pace of major content updates while maintaining the commitment to introduce a new hero every half-season. Consequently, the wait time between new hero releases will be significantly shortened starting from the hero following Ultron.
Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen elaborated on these changes in the Dev Vision video, stating, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media discussions have added pressure to keep the game as exciting as it has been since December, and to a certain extent, we agree." Chen emphasized NetEase's goal to keep the game's excitement level high, akin to its opening months, and described the ongoing journey with Marvel Rivals as "the real adventure just beginning."
Chen further explained that NetEase aims for Marvel Rivals to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by exploring new game modes and introducing a diverse roster of characters. Following "extensive internal discussions and thorough evaluations," NetEase will adjust its systems to accommodate the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will impact players will be shared before Season 3's launch.
NetEase recently unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, which will transition from a vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with additional information expected in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a phenomenal success, amassing 10 million players within just three days. The game was released across multiple platforms, including PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The launch on Steam was particularly impressive, with 480,990 concurrent players. Season 1 in January further boosted its popularity, reaching 644,269 concurrent players and ranking as the 15th most-played game on Steam.
Despite a recent decline in concurrent player numbers, Marvel Rivals remains one of the most-played games on Steam. The introduction of Season 2, and subsequently Season 3, is expected to reinvigorate player engagement.
