Italian developer 3DClouds has unveiled Formula Legends, an arcade-style open-wheel racer inspired by Art of Rally that offers an unlicensed homage to Formula 1's rich 50-year legacy.
After getting an exclusive early preview from IGN, it's clear the game's attention to historic F1 eras is remarkable - though elements like AI behavior remain works in progress.
The game will showcase 16 distinct car models with seven liveries each. While stylized in a chunky, toy-like aesthetic, the influence of legendary racecars shines through the unofficial designs. The team emphasized sound design as a priority - particularly important for capturing the unique roar of vintage F1 engines. Adding to the customization options, the game will include mod support for liveries, driver helmets and track sponsorships.
The 14 circuits featured will transform across different historical eras from the 1970s through 2020s, with clear inspiration from real-world tracks. The planned story mode promises a nostalgic journey through F1's most memorable racing eras and milestones.

Racing mechanics appear surprisingly deep for an arcade title, featuring 200 drivers (including humorously named standouts like Mike Shoemaker) with unique skill perks. The experience is further enhanced by dynamic weather, track rubberization, mechanical damage, and authentic tire/fuel management. Finding the sweet spot between accessibility and realism will be the team's key challenge.
Producer Francesco Mantovani credits New Star GP and Art of Rally as primary inspirations: "We aimed for a gameplay experience that strikes a balance between those titles - with Art of Rally's camera work and track design being especially influential."
Though known for licensed kids' racers like Paw Patrol Grand Prix, the studio considers Formula Legends a labor of love. "This feels like a game they've dreamed of making forever," explained executive producer Roberta Migliori. "Working on major franchises gave us the resources to self-fund this passion project when F1's popularity peaked - the timing couldn't be better."
The team's Milan location - just minutes from Monza's legendary circuit - undoubtedly fuels their motorsport passion. Formula Legends will race onto Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch later this year, with potential Switch 2 support to be explored post-launch.
