GTA 6 Delay Sparks Joy For EA, Differing Reactions For Others

Electronic Arts (EA) is feeling optimistic about the release of their upcoming title, Battlefield, thanks to the recent delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). However, reactions among other developers vary. Dive into this article to explore EA's perspective on their upcoming release and how the gaming community is responding to the GTA 6 delay.

GTA 6 Delay Effects and Reactions

Battlefield Release Window "Clearer Than It Was Before"

Following the announcement of GTA 6's delay, EA has solidified the release window for Battlefield. During the Q4 and FY 2025 Earnings Conference Call on May 6, EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that Battlefield is slated for a March 2026 release. The delay of GTA 6 has evidently bolstered EA's confidence in their strategic timing.

When discussing how major releases impact other game launches, Wilson noted that few companies can expedite their game releases to dodge GTA 6's original schedule. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, as Battlefield is now set to launch two months ahead of GTA 6.

The gaming industry has long grappled with the challenge of scheduling game releases around major titles like GTA 6, especially after its first trailer was revealed. With the delay, developers are recalibrating their plans, but EA feels content with how things have unfolded for Battlefield.

Wilson elaborated, "Relative to Battlefield, what we have said all along is we’ve been building towards a window that we thought made the most sense for Battlefield. But we wouldn’t launch into a window that we thought truncated the value that we’ve invested into the franchise, or the value that we think our players will derive from it once they jump in and start playing."

He emphasized that the "window is clearer than it was before" and expressed enthusiasm for the March 2026 release of Battlefield on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Death Stranding 2 Will Come Out Regardless of GTA 6’s Release Window

Meanwhile, Hideo Kojima, the director of Death Stranding 2 (DS2), acknowledged the industry's tendency to avoid direct competition with GTA 6. However, in a recent Koji Pro radio broadcast, Kojima clarified that DS2's release date was set long before the GTA 6 delay and remains unchanged.

Kojima mentioned hearing rumors of GTA 6's potential November release and noted that other companies typically adjust their schedules around such announcements. He likened this to the film industry's response to major releases like Mission Impossible: "For instance, if a new Mission Impossible movie were to release in May, others wouldn't be able to compete with that so would move somewhere else."

Despite the industry's maneuvers, Kojima is committed to sticking to DS2's development schedule, aiming for a September release. With DS2 now 95% complete, its launch is imminent.

Other Developers Steer Clear, Devolver Digital Says Bring It On

For many developers, navigating around GTA 6's release window is crucial for their games' success. According to The Game Business Show in March, numerous game executives are prepared to shift their release dates to sidestep GTA 6's launch.

An anonymous executive commented, "We will nudge our releases back or forward three weeks to avoid it. Of course, the problem is everyone is going to do the same. So three to four weeks before or after GTA 6, you’re going to get a load of games dropping content in what they believe will be the safe zone."

Conversely, Cult of the Lamb publisher Devolver Digital boldly announced plans to release a game on the same day as GTA 6. While the specific game remains undisclosed, Devolver Digital's extensive portfolio includes titles like Cult of the Lamb, Inscription, Hotline Miami, and potential new IPs.

The delay of GTA 6 has sent ripples throughout the gaming industry, prompting developers to adjust their release timelines. Some are steering clear, while others, like Devolver Digital, are ready to face the challenge head-on. GTA 6 is now scheduled for release on May 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated title.
