Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

Author : Mila Mar 26,2025

The Switch 2 Joy-Con appears to be stepping into new territory with the introduction of mouse support, as revealed by a recent patent published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025. This patent sheds light on the innovative features Nintendo is planning for its upcoming console, the Switch 2. The reveal trailer for the Switch 2 hinted at this new functionality when it showed the controller being used in a dragging motion across a flat surface, sparking speculation about its mouse-like capabilities.

Switch 2 Joy-Con: Introducing Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The joy-con for the Switch 2 retains the familiar design of detachable controllers from the main console, yet introduces a significant enhancement with mouse functionality. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface." This feature could revolutionize how users interact with their games, offering more precise control in certain scenarios.

Additionally, the joy-cons can be charged via a new dock capable of charging up to two joy-cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the joy-con to the console, complete with a wrist strap reminiscent of the original Nintendo Switch joy-cons. Furthermore, the patent introduces a new set of controllers that resemble a split standard controller, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.

It's important to note that the features described in the patent may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has not officially confirmed these details about the Switch 2's joy-con or any related accessories.
