Valve's recent SteamOS 3.6.9 Beta update, nicknamed "Megafixer," introduces key support for the ASUS ROG Ally, marking a significant expansion of SteamOS compatibility beyond the Steam Deck. This is a crucial step towards Valve's long-stated goal of broader SteamOS adoption. Valve designer Lawrence Yang confirmed this direction, highlighting the ongoing work to support additional handheld devices. While full SteamOS functionality on non-Steam Deck hardware isn't yet realized, this update represents substantial progress.

The update's focus on ROG Ally keys – the device's buttons and controls – aims to improve key mapping and functionality within the Steam ecosystem. However, initial reports suggest full functionality isn't yet present, even with the update.

This development could reshape the handheld gaming landscape. Previously limited to controller functionality in Steam games, the ROG Ally may eventually run SteamOS directly. This potential shift towards a more open and adaptable SteamOS across various handheld consoles promises a more unified gaming experience. While the immediate impact on ROG Ally functionality is limited, this update is a pivotal step toward a more inclusive and versatile SteamOS ecosystem.
