Sony, the maker of PlayStation, has pledged $5 million to aid the victims of the devastating wildfires currently sweeping across Southern California. The donation will support first responders, community relief and rebuilding efforts, and assistance programs for those affected.
In a joint statement on X/Twitter, Sony Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and President and COO Hiroki Totoki emphasized Los Angeles's significance as the home of Sony's entertainment business for over 35 years. They committed to continued collaboration with local leaders to identify the most effective ways Sony Group can contribute to relief and recovery efforts.
The wildfires, which began on January 7th, continue to ravage the greater Los Angeles area, even a week later. According to BBC reports, the fires have claimed 24 lives, with 23 people still missing. Firefighters are preparing for challenging conditions as strong winds are forecast to return.
Sony's contribution is part of a broader corporate response to the crisis. Other companies, including Disney ($15 million), Netflix and Comcast ($10 million each), the NFL ($5 million), Walmart ($2.5 million), and Fox ($1 million), have also made significant donations, as reported by CNBC.
