Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting 15% of its Workforce
Game developer Crytek has announced a difficult decision to lay off approximately 60 employees, representing 15% of its 400-person staff. The layoffs, impacting both development teams and shared services, come despite the continued growth of Hunt: Showdown.
In a statement from founder Avni Yerli, Crytek cited challenging market conditions and the need for financial sustainability as the driving factors behind the restructuring. Following the decision to postpone development of the next Crysis game in Q3 2024, the company had shifted resources towards Hunt: Showdown, implementing cost-cutting measures. However, these efforts proved insufficient to prevent the layoffs.
Yerli emphasized that Crytek remains committed to the future, particularly the continued success and expansion of Hunt: Showdown, along with ongoing support for its CRYENGINE. Affected employees will receive severance packages and career assistance.
The news follows the earlier, unannounced cancellation of a battle royale-inspired Crysis project, codenamed Crysis Next. This project, which briefly surfaced online via leaked gameplay footage, was ultimately scrapped in favor of Crysis 4, announced in January 2022. Since then, updates on Crysis 4 have been scarce.
The Crysis franchise, a renowned first-person shooter series known for its visually stunning graphics and innovative nanosuit technology, has a significant legacy. The original Crysis, released in 2007, became a benchmark for PC hardware capabilities, giving rise to the popular phrase, "But can it run Crysis?" The most recent main installment, Crysis 3, launched in February 2013, with remasters of earlier titles released in subsequent years.
