Keanu Reeves has just delivered the most exciting update yet on Constantine 2, confirming that the project is now moving forward to the scriptwriting phase. John Constantine, the iconic occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was brought to life by Reeves in the 2005 film, which has since gained a dedicated cult following. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for over two decades, and Reeves has consistently expressed his enthusiasm for reprising the role.
In a recent development, Reeves shared with Inverse that a pitch meeting at DC Studios has finally borne fruit. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay,'" Reeves stated. "So, we're going to try and write a script." This news signals a significant step toward the realization of Constantine 2.

While this development is promising, it's important to note that there's no guarantee that the script will be greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Constantine 2 is not currently listed as a confirmed project within the rebooted DCU, nor has it been mentioned by Gunn or Safran as a potential addition. The project remains on the edge of realization.
Reeves has also hinted that, should Constantine 2 come to fruition, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. "We're not going off that," he assured, before playfully adding, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
This update follows comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who revealed in September that a script for Constantine 2 was already in his inbox. Speaking to ComicBook, di Bonaventura admitted, "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough. I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane." His apprehension underscores the high stakes and expectations surrounding this long-awaited sequel.
