Jar of Sparks, the NetEase-backed studio founded by former Halo Infinite design head Jerry Hook, has paused development on its debut game project. The studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision.
Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the initial project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." While the studio hasn't publicly shared much since its inception, the search for a new publisher suggests challenges in bringing the project to fruition.
NetEase, a prominent global video game company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and Marvel Rivals. The latter, launched in December 2024, recently unveiled its Season 1 Battle Pass and is preparing for the addition of the Fantastic Four in January 2025.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause and the studio's intention to find a new publishing partner capable of supporting their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that team members would be exploring new opportunities, and a subsequent post confirmed efforts to place all team members in new roles as the first project concludes. This situation mirrors that of GPTRACK50 Studios, another NetEase-backed studio formed by a veteran game developer (Hiroyuki Kobayashi, former Resident Evil producer) in 2022.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, Hook's previous employer. Following challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series, 343 Industries has rebranded to Halo Studios and is transitioning to Unreal Engine for future projects. This restructuring may signal a potential resurgence for the franchise.
