George R. R. Martin Reveals 'There Is Some Talk About Making a Movie Out of Elden Ring,' but There's One Big, Obvious Thing That Could Limit His Involvement With It – IGN Fan Fest 2025

George R.R. Martin hints at a potential Elden Ring movie, but his involvement remains uncertain due to his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter.

The acclaimed author, known for creating the world of Game of Thrones, played a significant role in developing the lore of FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco prominently featured Martin's contribution in their marketing, crediting both Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin for the game's world creation.

While sidestepping questions about a potential Elden Ring 2, Martin revealed at IGN Fan Fest 2025 that discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation are underway. This isn't the first time he's alluded to such a project. Miyazaki himself has expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a strong collaborative partner due to FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.

However, Martin acknowledged a major obstacle to his substantial participation: his continued work on the long-awaited The Winds of Winter. He admitted to being significantly behind schedule on the novel, impacting his ability to take on additional projects. The delay has led to speculation about the novel's completion, with Martin himself acknowledging the possibility it might never be finished.

Martin elaborated on his contribution to Elden Ring, explaining his focus on world-building, creating the backstory for the game's current events. He described collaborative sessions with FromSoftware, where he provided concepts about the game's magic and runes, and subsequently witnessed the team's impressive realization of his ideas.

Regarding unused material, Martin confirmed the existence of additional lore created for the game, suggesting potential for future expansions or adaptations. He drew a parallel to Tolkien's extensive world-building, highlighting that only a fraction of such detailed creations typically appear in the final product.
