Unveiling the Nintendo Switch 2: Genki's CES Mockup Reveals Key Features

Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory developer, showcased a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, revealing several key design elements. Based on a reportedly black-market acquired unit, the model accurately reflects the console's dimensions, highlighting a larger size approaching that of the Steam Deck.

Genki CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed several speculated features in an interview with The Verge. The Joy-Con controllers now utilize magnetic attachment, employing a pin-release mechanism for detachment. Despite this change from the original Switch's sliding rails, the magnetic connection remains secure during gameplay.

Enhanced Joy-Con Functionality:

Each Joy-Con incorporates an optical sensor within its mounting channel. This suggests potential new functionality, possibly mouse-like control via a yet-to-be-released accessory, supported by leaked images showing similar sensors.

Compatibility and Design:

While the Switch 2 is slim enough to physically fit within the existing Switch dock, design differences prevent compatibility. The mockup also featured a second USB-C port and an enigmatic "C" button, the purpose of which remains unknown.

$290 at Amazon

The Genki mockup provided valuable insights into the upcoming Switch 2, confirming some rumors and sparking further speculation about its capabilities and accessories. The magnetic Joy-Con, optical sensors, and additional port suggest a significant upgrade from its predecessor.
