Exclusive: Legendary Pokemon TCG Artist Returns to Magic: The Gathering

Author : Anthony Feb 27,2025

Mitsuhiro Arita, a renowned artist celebrated for his work on the original Pokémon Trading Card Game, including the coveted Charizard, is now lending his artistic talents to Magic: The Gathering. His latest contribution is a Secret Lair drop featuring four stunning cards, and we have an exclusive preview.

View the gallery below to see all four cards in Arita's Secret Lair:

This isn't Arita's first foray into Magic; he previously illustrated a borderless Lumra, Bellow of the Woods, from the 2024 Bloomburrow set. However, this four-card Secret Lair represents a significant expansion of his involvement.

The selected cards boast impressive playability across various formats. The iconic Lightning Bolt is a staple in nearly every permitted format, while Murktide Regent has proven a powerhouse in Modern and Legacy since its 2021 Modern Horizons 2 debut. Light-Paws enjoys widespread popularity as a Commander, and Shorikai thrives in Vintage Cubes and ranks among the top 20 most popular Commanders according to EDHRec.

Wizards of the Coast's store page describes the drop as follows: "With almost three decades of experience creating beloved art for trading card games, Mitsuhiro Arita's work is globally recognized. His initial Magic: The Gathering collaboration, a borderless Lumra, Bellow of the Woods from 2024's Bloomburrow, quickly became a fan favorite. This Secret Lair Drop marks the legendary artist's return, showcasing his signature creature designs across four exceptional cards."

PlayAs is customary with Secret Lair drops, this collection will be available on the Secret Lair website. Non-foil versions will retail at $29.99, while foil versions will cost $39.99. Both will be available only while supplies last, launching Monday, February 10th, at 9 am PT. Given the swift sell-outs common with Secret Lairs since Wizards of the Coast transitioned from a print-to-order system last year, interested buyers should act quickly.

For further Magic news, explore the upcoming death race set, Aetherdrift (releasing next week), past Secret Lairs (such as Chucky and Monty Python), or learn about Wizards of the Coast's long-term strategy for the game.
