Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has just announced the much-anticipated Update 1.1.1. This update comes at a pivotal moment as the recently launched strategy game is seeing fewer players on Steam compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and even the 15-year-old Civilization 5. Currently, Civilization 7 has a 24-hour peak player count of 16,921 on Steam, which doesn't rank it in the top 100 most-played games. In contrast, Civilization 5, released back in 2010, boasts a higher 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, significantly outperforms with 40,676 players. This indicates a strong preference among fans for the earlier titles.
In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis outlined the "additions and refinements" that players can expect with Update 1.1.1, including:
- Quick Move Functionality
- New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
- Additional UI Updates & Polish
- Settlement & Commander Renaming
- And more!
In a comprehensive video, lead designer Ed Beach walked through these changes, with full patch notes soon to be released.
Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:
----------------------------------------The Quick Move feature is now an optional setting that can be toggled on in the game's menu, allowing units to move to their destination instantly for a faster gameplay experience.
A new start position option related to map generation has been introduced. For single-player games, the default setting is now Standard, offering a more varied and less predictable continental layout reminiscent of Civilization 6. For multiplayer, the Balanced setting remains to ensure a level playing field with consistent maps.
Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their gameplay. Additionally, a restart feature allows players to generate a new map with the same leader and civilization selections, perfect for getting that ideal first settlement.
UI improvements include a persistent city and town panel when purchasing items, new notifications for cities under attack, indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. Pacing changes have also been implemented to improve the overall flow of the game.
Alongside this update, the Crossroads of the World Collection introduces new civilizations Bulgaria and Nepal, and a new leader, Simón Bolívar, available as of March 25.

Civilization 7 has sparked controversy among series veterans due to its new mechanics and has struggled on Steam, where it currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating and received a 7/10 from IGN. In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed optimism, believing that the "legacy Civ audience" will embrace the game with more playtime, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
