Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. Evans himself reiterated this to Esquire, stating he is "happily retired" and that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame.
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre, his appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine was a cameo, significantly different from his leading role as Captain America.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors was slated to play Kang, a significant antagonist, but his departure has reportedly thrown Marvel's plans into disarray.
Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has been announced as the new primary villain, leading to speculation about other original Avengers returning. However, no further official confirmations have been made.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but his involvement in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is confirmed as a "central role." The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also reportedly appearing.
