Captain America: Brave New World's global box office haul is approaching $300 million, but a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability. Deadline reports a production budget of $180 million and a break-even point estimated around $425 million.
The film exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic opening weekend, but its second weekend's $28.2 million gross mirrors the steep decline seen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs. After two weekends, Comscore data shows a global gross of approximately $289.4 million ($141.2 million domestic and $148.2 million international), with a worldwide weekend two gross of $63.5 million.
Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 so far, the substantial second-weekend drop was unexpected, particularly given the lack of competing blockbusters. Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented to Variety that this significant decline reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films. Deadline projects a final global box office total of around $450 million.
The film's launch coincided with largely negative critical reception; IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, citing a lack of innovation and ultimately underwhelming execution despite strong performances from the cast.
Marvel Studios and Disney will be hoping for a strong rebound to counteract the recent trend of underperforming MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine), building momentum towards Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
