The writer behind the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to step in and assist Marvel chief Kevin Feige in reviving Mahershala Ali's stalled MCU reboot of Blade. Despite initial excitement and various development stages, the project has faced numerous setbacks, leaving fans and industry insiders puzzled about its future.
Blade, first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, was expected to hit theaters in November of this year. However, the film has encountered multiple roadblocks, including a revolving door of directors such as Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, none of whom have stayed with the project. Just seven months ago, Blade was removed from Marvel's release schedule, and no new date has been set.
Recent comments from individuals involved in the project shed light on its current state. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, took to X/Twitter to lament the project's demise. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he shared. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who was gearing up to design for a 1920s-set Blade, confirmed on The John Campea Show that the project had fallen apart. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was set to star alongside Ali, told Entertainment Weekly that despite initial enthusiasm and inclusivity from Marvel, the project "just went off the rails."
Despite these setbacks, Marvel Studios remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU. Kevin Feige emphasized this commitment in an interview with Omelete in November 2024, stating, "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You're all up to date on what's happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU."
David S. Goyer, a self-proclaimed Marvel fan and the writer of the original Blade trilogy, expressed his confusion about the delays in a recent interview with ScreenRant. When asked if he would be willing to write Marvel's Blade reboot, Goyer responded affirmatively, saying, "I would... I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled."
In related news, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool, praised Snipes' contribution to the superhero genre, noting on X/Twitter, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off." Reynolds has also been reported to be in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters.
