Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
Larian Studios' highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has unleashed a tidal wave of community-created mods. The response has been phenomenal.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. This confirms the significant impact of modding on the game's continued success. Further bolstering this, mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reported that the install count has since exploded, surpassing three million and still climbing. "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating," Reismanis tweeted.
Patch 7's impact extends beyond the sheer number of mods. It introduced a wealth of new content, including sinister new endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and, crucially, Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management, all within the game itself.
Modding tools, available separately via Steam, empower creators to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can incorporate custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (courtesy of modder Siegfre on Nexus) has even unlocked a full level editor and reactivated previously restricted features within Larian's editor, as reported by PC Gamer. While Larian has previously been selective about releasing its full development tools, stating their focus is game development, not tool creation, this community initiative highlights the player base's enthusiasm.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the considerable challenge of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will launch first, with console support following after thorough testing and submission processes.
Beyond the modding phenomenon, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, fresh animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements. Future updates from Larian promise further developments, particularly regarding cross-platform modding capabilities.
