"Adult LEGO Fan's First Buy: Mario Set, No Regrets"

Author : Adam Mar 27,2025

As someone who prides themselves on practicality with money, my spending habits have always leaned towards the essentials. Occasionally, I indulge in a video game on sale, but splurging on something like a LEGO set was out of character until recently. Despite my childhood love for LEGO, the hobby faded as I grew older, partly due to the high costs associated with these sets. For instance, while basic sets can be found for under $25, any set linked to popular movie or video game franchises tends to be pricier.

It was only last year that I finally succumbed to the allure of the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October for under $50. The decision to buy was driven by a desire to add a unique "potted plant" to my desk.

My interest in this set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. As a long-time fan of the Mario franchise, this set felt like the perfect homage to display on my desk. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical charm and playful menace of the Piranha Plant.

Now that I've built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It brings me joy to imagine I'm in the Mushroom Kingdom, tending to my Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process itself was enjoyable and challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout an afternoon. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be quite expensive, with some reaching over $200. It's easy to get carried away with these delightful creations, but it's important to balance indulgence with financial responsibility. The LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was within my comfort zone, offering hours of enjoyment and daily happiness. For me, that happiness is worth more than the price tag, but $50 is my limit.
