The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Ryan Jan 29,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a smaller, curated selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles. This list focuses on those available on the Switch eShop, excluding Nintendo Switch Online offerings. We've compiled ten favorites – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS games – presented without any specific ranking. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a personal preference, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A fun comparison piece, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of your platform preference, even for those who aren't usually into shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially a bit rough around the edges, launches an excellent series. The subsequent games refine the formula, but this first entry is the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept is cleverly executed, though later installments show diminishing returns. Still, plenty of fun to be had.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing through entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For the right mood, it rivals even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult classic, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title established Shantae's popularity, securing her place across console generations. Interestingly, it's somewhat of a successor to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. While later installments exist, the first game is exceptionally well-crafted.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick boasts compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to help others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and often overlooked Nintendo DS gem.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A fantastic game across the board.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow shines due to improved button controls over the original's touch controls. All three games in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS systems, this adaptation remains enjoyable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest, is a worthwhile experience despite its complexities.
