Palworld Developer Pocketpair Moves Into Publishing to Release Tales of Kenzera Dev's Next Game

Author : Claire Mar 05,2025

Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld, is branching out into publishing with its new venture, Pocketpair Publishing. Their first project will be a new horror game from Surgent Studios, the creators of Tales of Kenzera: Zau. This upcoming title will be a standalone project, distinct from the Tales of Kenzera universe, though Surgent Studios remains open to future projects within that setting.

Surgent Studios CEO Abubakar Salim, also known for his acting roles (including Bayek in Assassin's Creed Origins), described the new game as "short and weird," reflecting a shared risk-taking approach between both studios. While details remain scarce—no release date or title has been announced—the collaboration signifies a significant step for Surgent Studios, which recently faced layoffs and funding challenges. This partnership offers crucial support for their continued development.

Pocketpair Publishing's approach emphasizes developer autonomy, stating on its website that it aims to avoid dictating creative direction. John Buckley, Head of Pocketpair Publishing, highlighted the company's commitment to supporting creators and fostering an environment where they can freely pursue their visions. Salim expressed his enthusiasm for this collaborative spirit, viewing it as a positive force within the gaming industry.

Meanwhile, Pocketpair continues to navigate a patent infringement lawsuit filed by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, a legal battle that arose despite Palworld's commercial success. The new publishing venture represents a strategic diversification for Pocketpair, extending its influence beyond game development. The reception of Tales of Kenzera: Zau, while positive (earning a 7/10 from IGN), wasn't enough to secure the studio's long-term financial stability, underscoring the significance of this publishing deal.
