New Mercenary Troops System Added to Age of Empires Mobile

Author : Thomas Apr 05,2025

Ever dreamed of witnessing Joan of Arc leading Roman Centurions into battle or Hannibal Barca deploying Japanese Samurai to conquer Rome? With the latest update to Age of Empires Mobile, this dream can become a reality thanks to the introduction of the new Mercenary Troops system. This exciting feature allows you to field units that are typically exclusive to other factions, adding a thrilling twist to your strategic gameplay.

Once you reach level 26, you'll unlock the Mercenary Camp structure, which is your gateway to contracting and recruiting these powerful new units. Not only can you hire these mercenaries, but you can also unlock and upgrade technology to enhance their combat effectiveness. To get you started, the first mercenaries can be secured for free through a new event that's currently live.

The new Mercenary units available include Byzantine Cataphracts, Swiss Pikemen, Persian Immortals, Indian Battle Elephants, Roman Centurions, Egyptian Chariot Archers, Japanese Samurai, and Korean Archers. Each of these units comes with technology options to further boost their already impressive battlefield capabilities.

The addition of the Mercenary Troops system brings a Total War vibe to Age of Empires Mobile, reminiscent of overwhelming foes with hired swords in games like Rome: Total War and Medieval II. However, this feature might be divisive; some players might view it as disrupting the game's balance. Only time will tell how this system will be received by the community. Who knows? We might even see custom units like the historical Landsknechts offered in the future.
