Summary

  • Larian Studios shifts focus to developing a new title following the success of Baldur's Gate 3.
  • Limited support continues for BG3, with Patch 8 introducing new features.
  • Details on Larian's next project remain scarce.

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a full pivot to the development of its next title. With the majority of post-launch support for Baldur's Gate 3 now concluded, the studio is eager to build on the success of its 2023 hit.

Before the launch of Baldur's Gate 3 in late 2023, Larian had already established itself as a powerhouse in the CRPG genre, having developed Divinity: Original Sin and its 2017 sequel. The acclaim and success of these titles paved the way for Larian to take on the prestigious Baldur's Gate license, previously helmed by BioWare. Baldur's Gate 3 not only became a mega-hit but also garnered numerous Game of the Year awards, drawing in players who typically wouldn't venture into CRPGs. This triumph has significantly bolstered Larian's reputation, sparking anticipation for their next endeavor.

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed, "Swen and the team's full attention is focused on crafting their next title." They also announced a "media blackout" to minimize distractions as they work on this new project. While some limited support will persist for Baldur's Gate 3, including the forthcoming Patch 8 with its new features, the studio appears to be largely moving on from the game.

Larian Now Focused on Developing Its First Post-Baldur's Gate 3 Title

Currently, very little is known about Larian's next project following Baldur's Gate 3. In mid-2024, Larian opened a new studio to aid in the development of two ambitious RPGs, though it remains unclear whether they will proceed with both or focus on one. Speculation among fans suggests that Larian might leverage its experience from Baldur's Gate 3 to create Divinity: Original Sin 3, or perhaps venture into a brand-new IP. As the studio maintains a tight lid on details, fans will have to wait patiently for more information.

The future of the Baldur's Gate franchise is uncertain as Larian steps away, leaving Wizards of the Coast with the challenging task of finding a worthy successor. Any new title will undoubtedly be compared to the high standards set by Baldur's Gate 3. However, there's a silver lining: several actors from Baldur's Gate 3 have expressed willingness to reprise their roles in future installments, even if Larian is not involved, hinting at the potential for some familiar faces in upcoming games.
