Tate Mode Mini Controller: Play Games in Portrait Mode!

If you're an avid gamer, chances are you've tried playing vertical arcade games on your smartphone and found the experience less than satisfying. A modder named Max Kern has stepped up to address this common frustration with a new invention: the Tate Mode mini controller. But does it truly solve the problem?

Traditional controllers are designed with landscape mode in mind, suitable for devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games are best enjoyed in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram. Recognizing this gap, Max Kern engineered a compact USB-C gamepad tailored specifically for portrait, or Tate mode, gaming. This innovative controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Max constructed the Tate Mode mini controller using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip and crafted the case and buttons via 3D printing through JLCPCB. Enthusiasts can replicate this project by following his detailed tutorial available on his YouTube channel.

What's Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

The controller leverages the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its compact design belies its impressive versatility.

However, there are concerns about the strain it might place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad bears some of the phone's weight. Users will need to support both the phone and the controller to avoid potential damage to the connector over time.

Feedback on Reddit ranges from admiration to apprehension. Some users worry about hand cramps and discomfort, while others are more open to embracing this innovative solution.

It's important to note that the Tate Mode mini controller is more of a DIY project than a commercial product. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and GitHub. What are your thoughts on this tiny gamepad? Share your comments below!
