Brazil Mandates Apple to Enable Sideloading

Author : Christopher May 19,2025

Another significant crack has appeared in Apple's once-impenetrable walled garden, as Brazil has become the latest country to mandate the implementation of sideloading on iOS devices. Apple has been given a 90-day window to comply with the court order, following similar rulings in other countries. The judge highlighted Apple's prior compliance with such mandates elsewhere, setting a precedent for the current situation.

Apple, unsurprisingly, intends to appeal the decision. For those unfamiliar, sideloading refers to the ability to download and install apps directly onto a device, bypassing the official app store. This practice has long been available to Android users through the use of APK files, allowing them to install third-party applications with ease.

Historically, Apple has staunchly opposed sideloading and third-party app stores, valuing the curated ecosystem of its App Store. The issue gained significant attention following Epic Games' lawsuit against Apple more than five years ago, which spotlighted the tech giant's control over its platform.

PeekabooApple's primary defense against the ruling hinges on privacy concerns, a recurring theme in their resistance to sideloading and third-party storefronts. In 2022, Apple introduced the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) changes, which required developers to seek permission for advertising and limited user profiling capabilities. These changes have attracted regulatory scrutiny, particularly because Apple itself was exempt from these restrictions.

Despite their privacy-focused stance, Apple continues to face increasing pressure and appears to be losing ground in the battle against sideloading and third-party app stores. Countries like Vietnam and the broader European Union are pushing for more openness, signaling that Apple's days of maintaining strict control over its ecosystem may be numbered.
