Balatro Dev Localthunk Tackles AI Art Reddit Controversy

Author : Sarah Apr 19,2025

Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened in a controversy brewing within the Balatro subreddit, sparked by comments from a moderator on AI-generated art.

The situation unfolded when DrTankHead, who was a moderator for both the main Balatro subreddit and a NSFW Balatro subreddit, stated that AI-generated art would be allowed on both platforms, provided it was properly labeled. DrTankHead claimed this decision followed discussions with Playstack, the game's publisher.

However, Localthunk quickly clarified their stance on Bluesky, stating that neither they nor Playstack supported the use of AI-generated art. They further elaborated in a statement on the subreddit, emphasizing their opposition to AI art due to its detrimental impact on artists. Localthunk confirmed that DrTankHead had been removed from the moderation team and that the subreddit would no longer permit AI-generated images. They also announced plans to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this policy.

In response, Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the existing rules could have been misinterpreted and noted that the remaining moderation team would clarify the language around AI content.

DrTankHead, after being removed from the main Balatro subreddit, addressed the situation in the NSFW Balatro subreddit, clarifying that they did not intend to make the subreddit AI-focused but were considering a designated day for posting AI-generated, non-NSFW art. A user suggested that DrTankHead take a break from Reddit for a couple of weeks.

The debate over AI-generated content in gaming and entertainment industries remains heated, especially amid widespread layoffs. Critics, including players and creators, have raised concerns about ethical and rights issues, as well as the quality of AI-generated content. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to create a fully AI-generated game failed, with the company admitting to investors that AI could not replace human talent.

Despite these challenges, tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI. EA has declared AI central to its business model, while Capcom is exploring generative AI for creating in-game environments. Activision has also utilized generative AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which drew criticism following the release of a poorly received AI-generated zombie Santa loading screen.
