Xbox CEO Pledges His Support For Switch 2
Xbox Will Continue Porting Games to Nintendo Switch 2
In an insightful interview with Gamertag Radio on January 25, 2025, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer announced his commitment to supporting Nintendo Switch 2 by porting multiple Xbox games to the new platform. Spencer's enthusiasm for Nintendo's next hybrid console was evident, as he praised their innovative approach in the gaming industry.
Spencer shared that he has been in communication with Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, congratulating him on the upcoming release. "I was exchanging emails with Furukawa-san, the CEO of Nintendo. I gave him a big congrats and said my old eyes appreciate the larger screen," Spencer remarked.
He further emphasized Nintendo's significant role in the industry, stating, "Nintendo, their innovation, and what they mean in this industry… I just always applaud the moves that they make. They did a little flash video, and I know we’ll get more detail over time. I’m really looking forward to supporting them with the games that we have, and I just think they’re a really important part of this industry."
While specific titles were not disclosed during the interview, Microsoft's existing 10-year agreement with Nintendo, announced on February 25, 2023, ensures that games like "Call of Duty" will be available to Nintendo players on the same day as Xbox, with full feature and content parity, as stated by Microsoft president Brad Smith.
Currently, Xbox is expanding its reach by bringing titles like "Grounded" and "Pentiment" to rival platforms, including the current Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. With the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2, more Xbox games are expected to make their way to Nintendo's latest hybrid console.
Xbox is Working on a New Platform
In the same interview, Spencer highlighted Xbox's ongoing efforts to develop new hardware, even as they extend their games to competing platforms.
Spencer stressed the importance of multi-platform success, saying, "Games that run across so many different platforms are the most successful ones, and Xbox must capitalize on their success. I want to build a platform that services those creators, the creators that are trying to meet people on every screen."
While Xbox aims to support game creators in reaching a broader audience, Spencer underscored their commitment to creating innovative hardware that appeals to both developers and players. "Let’s go build innovative hardware that people want to use to play, whether that’s in their hands, whether it’s on the television, or even other places."
Xbox's strategy is clear: to make their games more accessible to a wider audience without restricting them to their own ecosystem, all while continuously developing new consoles and handheld devices.
Xbox Plans to Reach More Players on Various Devices
On November 14, 2024, Xbox Marketing senior director Craig McNary unveiled the new slogan, "This is an Xbox," which reflects their goal of extending Xbox's reach to a variety of devices.
"This Is an Xbox invites people to play with Xbox across multiple devices and screens," McNary explained. This campaign highlights Xbox's evolution as a platform that spans across devices, characterized by its bold, iconic, and fun visuals with a light-hearted tone. Launched on that day, the campaign will be brought to life through various engaging methods.
The campaign humorously showcased various objects like a remote control, laptop, cat box, and bento box, playfully questioning what Xbox is or isn't. Despite the playful nature, the underlying message is clear: Xbox aims to connect with players through numerous devices. To bring this vision to life, Xbox has partnered with brands such as Samsung, Crocs™, and Porsche, enhancing the campaign's impact in unexpected and entertaining ways.Xbox's approach contrasts with its competitors, who often focus on exclusive games. Instead, Xbox is dedicated to making their games accessible on rival consoles, ensuring that more players can enjoy their titles.
