Super Meat Boy is back—bloodier and bouncier than ever—with the announcement of Super Meat Boy 3D at today’s Xbox Games Showcase. As the title suggests, this is a full-fledged three-dimensional entry in the notoriously challenging platforming series. Scheduled for release in early 2026, the game will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms.
The debut trailer showcases what fans have come to expect from the franchise: fast-paced, brutally difficult gameplay filled with razor-sharp obstacles, deadly traps, and relentless respawns. In classic fashion, Meat Boy slides, jumps, and splats his way through compact, precision-based levels, leaving behind a trail of crimson carnage. However, this time around, everything takes place in an immersive 3D environment—a shift that promises to revolutionize level design, player movement, and overall challenge structure.
Originally born as a 2008 Flash game by Edmund McMillen and Jonathan McEntee, Meat Boy quickly evolved into the indie sensation Super Meat Boy, known for its razor-sharp controls, instant retries, and sadistically difficult yet rewarding gameplay loops. The series has always embraced its grotesque aesthetic, with Meat Boy himself being nothing more than a cube of muscle and guts, constantly being shredded, crushed, and mangled in increasingly creative ways.
A follow-up titled Super Meat Boy Forever launched in 2020 without Edmund McMillen's involvement. At this time, it remains unknown whether he is part of the development team behind Super Meat Boy 3D.
Interestingly, the trailer opened with a curious nod to Nintendo—a green Mario pipe made a brief appearance despite no mention of a Switch version and the reveal taking place during an Xbox-focused presentation. No official explanation has been provided for this unexpected cameo.
