Sony addressed the near day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation of the cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their subscriptions.
Gamers experienced widespread disruption throughout the outage; over one-third were unable to log in, while others reported server failures.
The outage highlights concerns among players who object to Sony's requirement of a PSN account even for single-player games on PC.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. A significant data breach in April 2011 resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent incident has left PS5 users dissatisfied with Sony's limited communication regarding the issue.
